    Blood sugar spot check

    Morning blood sugar (fasting): 82.

    Post-prandial (1-hr) blood sugar 1:30 pm: 89.

Oh, and I made the yummiest, sugar-free apple pie. You can't believe there's no sugar added. I took one ready-made pie crust from the store, dusted the bottom with flour, peeled and grated 4-5 big apples and laid them into the pie shell, mixed 2 eggs and 1 cup of milk with 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg and 1tsp. cinnamon and poured that over the apples and tamped everything down. Then into a 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The kids couldn't stop eating it, and neither could I! Okay, it does have fruit sugar and a goodly portion of carbs from the pie crust, but one slice is a great way to spend two carbs. Plus it's lo-fat.

    Skin still inflamed

My skin is no longer extremely dry (that lotion is excellent), but it is still pretty inflamed, esp. one spot on my right temple and one on my left cheek. I really think it's the rosacea again.

Forgot to mention before, my long-term blood sugar test was normal (yay), so the diet is still good. I am going back on June 23 for another thyroid blood test.

    Dry skin better

I got the skin lotion. I've used it before, when I had rosacea. It really moisturizes well, but the gross thing is, its active ingredient is urea. OK, it's industrially produced, but still. It hydrates so well, I only need to use it once every other day. It feels pretty greasy going on and makes my face all shiny, but the inflammation has definitely gone down.

    Blood test results

    Ferritin 16 (normal 10-310)
    TSH basal 20.39 (normal 0.35-4.5)
    FT4 13.6 (normal 10.3-21.9)
    FT3 3.83 (normal 3.08-6.47)

What it means: My thyroid has to be overstimulated in order to produce even a minimal amount of thyroid hormone. This is because there is so little of the thyroid left. The harder it has to work, the weaker it becomes and the quicker it "burns out".

Solution: I need to take more artificial thyroid hormone in order to relieve my thyroid. I am upping the dosage to 0.10 mcg 3 times a week, 0.05 mcg the other 4 days.

I also got a prescription for a lotion for my skin because it is so dry. I haven't filled that yet.

    Blood test -- nearly fainted

I had a blood test at the doctor's office today... Well, actually, I was supposed to have it yesterday, but I forgot Embarrassed, so they let me come today instead.

I told the nurse to take the sample from my left arm, because last time the other nurse said the veins in my right arm were getting hard (probably from all the blood tests). So she poked the needle into my left arm, but said that the veins on that side were actually pretty fragile... and boy, did it hurt! She took forever getting enough blood out (she needed to fill two vials), and by the time she was done, I was dizzy, sweating slightly, and started seeing black dots. She and the other office assistant immediately concluded that my blood sugar was too low and practically shoved a cube of sugar down my throat. Then they made me lie down for 10 minutes. They wanted me to see the doctor, too, to make sure I was okay, but I felt better by then and had to get to work, so I skipped out. Tongue out Oh, did I mention I hadn't had anything to eat in 12 hours because the blood test had to be done on an empty stomach? Yeah. So maybe it really was low blood sugar. Or maybe she took too much blood!

I have felt fine since then. I hate that I ate that sugar. I wish at least they had given me a piece of bread instead... but I guess sugar is easier to keep around a doctor's office in case of emergencies.

I'm supposed to go back next Tuesday morning for the test results.

Oh yeah, and my blood sugar 1 hour after lunch today was 79 again. Although, I have to admit I didn't eat a piece of fruit; I figured that sugar this morning was enough sweets!

    Mostly better

Blood sugar one hour after lunch: 79. Kind of low, actually. I should have eaten more!

My cold is mostly better now. I won't say 100%, because I still have a bit of a scratchy throat in the morning, but other than that I feel pretty good. It never really developed into a full-fledged cold, no other symptoms came up.

I biked to work today, so I'm feeling very virtuous. It was a nice ride, broke a sweat, but didn't feel completely drained afterwards.

My skin has been super dry lately, and I have a breakout of acne that just won't go away. I will try to remember to ask the doctor about it when I see him next week. I have the feeling it's because the thyroid med is too low.
